As a small business owner, you’re often tasked with many, if not all, aspects of your business. There’s one crucial area that tends to cause the most confusion, carries a considerable cost and is quite entwined with the day-to-day operations. That problem area just happens to be IT!
Over the years I’ve seen businesses over spend on technology, anywhere from hardware to software to support and service. I would like to share a tale of wasted IT spending with you, the name is fictional, but the story is true.
I was off to perform an IT assessment for B & R Rentals, everything was going routinely enough, until the review of their support agreements. I came across a $350.00/month invoice, after further investigation, I had found the culprit. It was a support agreement for their old application server which had been decommissioned two years earlier. The agreement should have been cancelled when the server was removed.
Uninformed, the accounting department just continued to pay the invoices. This oversight ended up being an unnecessary $8400.00 IT spend.
Unfortunately, tales of wasted IT spending are quite common, particularly when a business is without an IT Manager or anyone with IT expertise. An IT consulting company can be a valuable partner, and will safeguard your business from similar situations.
